The history of action cams is closely related to GoPro’s history, being the main promoters of the concept, where users were not even aware of the need for such a product. It was enough for GoPro to launch the HD Hero in 2010 and in less than 7 years they have reached from market of ~ 200K units (in 2010), at a market of 10 million units (2016). The company founded by Nick Woodman in 2002 is currently worth $ 1.6 billion.

One of the most important launches in GoPro’s recent history was in 2016, GoPro Hero 5 bringing a series of long-awaited changes to users (the waterproof camera without the external casing, the return to the configuration that consecrated GoPro (2 buttons), voice command, image stabilization etc.

GoPro unveiled the new GoPro Hero6 Black, an action camera that can shoot at 4K resolution with 60FPS. It’s impressive, and if we add the fact that it has image stabilization, things are excellent. The camera can shoot at Full HD resolution with 240FPS or 120FPS, has electronic image stabilization that has been improved anyway from the previous generation. Unfortunately, it has only one minus. 4K resolution with 60FPS is without image stabilization. Only at 30FPS can you have stabilization.

The differences to the GoPro Hero 5 Black are not considerable, the new top of the range being basically an upgraded version of the model launched a year ago. Thus, the camera is equipped with a 1 / 2.3″ CMOS sensor that can capture 12MP (4000 × 3000) images in JPEG or RAW format, HDR images (a novelty in the action-cam area) or 4K 60fps video, respectively Full HD video with up to 240fps.

GoPro HERO6 Black incorporates the latest technology, from stereo audio and noise cancelling with the second microphone, GPS, voice command, color LCD with touchscreen, 5GHz WiFi connection, image stabilizer and QuikStories application, which can automatically perform a montage with the most exciting scenes shot on that day.

GoPro HERO6 Black

The camera is waterproof up to a depth of 10m, without the need for a special case, however, if you dive, you can purchase a separate case to shoot at 60m deep. The GoPro HERO6 Black weighs only 117g and is equipped with a 1220mAh battery, and the price is $ 100 higher than the previous generation – $499.99 .

Being water resistant, GoPro HERO6 Black no longer needs the polycarbonate case, being mounted in a grip frame. Besides the fact that the whole assembly weighs less, the main advantage of this configuration is the sound quality, which is clearly superior to the previous Hero models.

The GoPro HERO6 Black comes with two buttons, just like the Hero – Hero 3 series. The top button starts and stops recording, both in standby mode and when the camera is turned off, while the side button has a double role (on / off in the case of a long press, respectively selection of the operation mode (Video, Photo, Burst, Time-lapse).

The rubber buttons can be pressed much easier than the classic metal buttons with the spring, and the sound signal and the two status LEDs indicate both the visual and acoustic taking of the command. Menu navigation is much easier now, thanks to the touchscreen display, but it remains to be seen how easy it is to use it in the winter with gloves.

The exterior is identical to the GoPro Hero 5 Black – unlike the models launched up to the Hero 4 generation, including now we have a waterproof camera without an external case, so it is wrapped in a rubberized material, the areas where the connectors are protected with two sealed doors, with a button lock mechanism.

The front lens is flat to get quality images both on the surface and under water and can be changed in service if it is damaged. On the front side, we find the secondary display showing the most important information (usage mode, number of photos or minutes recorded in that session, free space on the card, or battery charge level.

On the lower side we find the battery compartment and the microSD card, next to which the loudspeaker is mounted. The upper side is equipped with the Rec / Stop button, but also with the main microphone, with the secondary microphone positioned on the right side of the microphone beside the On / Off – Mode button. The left side is equipped with the second compartment, where we find the USB Type-C connector and the Micro HDMI connector.

When we start the camera for the first time, we will choose the basic settings (date, time, connection to a smartphone with QuikStories application), not before going through a short tutorial explaining how to use the touchscreen. Thus, to change the mode or settings (resolution, speed, angle of coverage), it is enough to touch the bottom of the display. To access advanced settings, we’ll have to swipe from right to left, while connecting to other devices is done from the menu that we can open by swiping from the top to the bottom. Similarly, access to the gallery is made by a swipe from left to right.

Under Advanced Settings, you can choose the exposure time (for photos), the sensitivity, the color temperature, the color profile used, etc. Here too we can start or stop the image stabilization, or how we capture the sound (stereo or with noise cancelling enabled).

In the Preferences and Connection menu we can choose the type of WiFi connection used (2.4 or 5GHz), we can change the name and password for the room, we can turn on or off the voice command function, we can set what happens if I press the Rec button when the camera is turned off (shooting, shooting, etc.), we can set the standby time for both the camera and display, the main display brightness, the video format, or we can turn the GPS on / off.

GoPro HERO6 Consclusion

With an good image stabilization, impeccable sound quality for cam action, and the ability to shoot 4K @ 60fps and FullHD @ 240fps respectively, the GoPro HERO6 Black is the ideal tool for both professionals and enthusiasts, offering one of the best user experiences I’ve ever encountered on a action cam.

The sensitivity of the touch screen is bad, some swipes have to be repeated, and the life of the battery is not impressive at all. Except for these aspects, I did not notice other weaknesses, the GoPro HERO6 Black being an exceptional action cam that I am convinced that any passionate person wants it.
